Reuters cameraman killed by his own stupidity...
A Reuters crew of three local stringers was shot at and one of them killed the other day when they decided to video an Israeli tank across a small valley. The tank crew, very likely saw the crew and thought they were settin gup an ATGM to fire at the them. So they put fire on the presumed enemy forces which turned out to be a camera man, two other civilians.

From the front a video camera and an Anti tank missile launcher can look remarkably similar. Now days, markings on the side of a vehicle look like squat. UN vehicles have been stolen and used to attack civilians. "TV" in gaffers tape on the side and on the hood doesn't do much for your safety if the other side thinks groups like Hamas or Hezballah are using that to camouflage their movements. The fact is that those groups have used ambulances and other vehicles to move around combat forces.

Illegal combatants are such specifically because they get innocents killed in situations like this.

It certainly does. Unfortunately, the nature of asymmetrical warfare with combatants NOT wearing uniforms and clearly separating themselves from non-combatants means that non combatants will be killed through no malicious intent from the uniformed combatants.

This is a risk they take by going over there during war. Considering how many plain clothes people are walking around with bombs strapped to them, the military can't always wait and see if the other person is going to try to blow them up first. Journalists and cameramen are really putting their lives on the line just being there.
It sucks though, and I feel awful for the guy's family.

I can't take credit for this but I agree perfectly with it:

A reporter must understand his subject. if he does not, he is suffering from stupid. pointing a big box with optics attached at a tank and crew on combat footing is just the same as any of the following:

Jumping in blood chummed waters with sharks and no cage or chainmail

Hiking into bear country and bringing something that bears like for food.

Going to a meeting with hezballah and not showing some serious respect or worse saying something rude about the prophet.

Or simply hiking into the wilderness with not enough gear.

All will get you killed. Stupid can be deadly.

It boggles the mind that any journalists working in that environment could be so ignorant.

Reminds me of an article I read the other day. A teenager was shot by the cops after pointing an air rifle at them. Now the kid's parents want answers. "I'm sorry. Your son was too stupid to survive natural selection" is probably not the answer his parents were hoping for.
