Thanks for your interpretation of the debate.
I missed most of the debate (was out for a friend's birthday dinner) and only caught the last question and felt that both candidates completely ignored it.
The question was very simple: "would you be willing to commit US troops to support Israel?"
Of course, the answer was always going to be complex, but neither answer was very good. Talking just about Iran and nukes doesn't consider the other aspects of Israel's position in the Middle East. Neither professed anything like my opinion of what should be done with respect to supporting Israel, per the question.
And that reflects how well they've answered any of the questions that have been relevant in this election.
Obama is a great orator and charismatic, being able to raise emotions without actually giving clear details.
McCain has been able to talk well on about 3 issues, and on the rest has been able to only give paltry sound bites. And I think his pick of 2IC was absolutely ridiculous.
Gah.
Maybe I'll catch the full soundbites, I mean "debate", on rerun later this week.

I generally agree, however, taking the point that McCain made earlier about telegraphing your actions is not necessarily a good thing. He's got OPSEC and realpolitik principles/problems down (I'd expect being a beaten upon POW for several years would drive that point firmly home).

He talks of being supportive of our allies and such, I'd be pretty surprised if he just came out and said so. Even in the run up to the 1st Gulf War Iraq threatened use of NBC weapons, the US response was some sort of vague hint that use of NBC weapons opened the playing field and that we'd respond in kind. In response to open and blatant threats we were coy. Saddamn Hussein demurred on their use and decided that taking some tac nukes was NOT a good trade for REALLY pissing us off and still loosing.

Israel has a capable military. If they took a nuke they'd be dead as a country but not as a military force. They'd still have some sort of response capability to take out the enemy. Either the Alert Nuclear fighter bombers they have OR their subs would get special ordnance on target. Short of that, we'd have more time to examine options.

Though, honestly, in some respects standing back and letting Israel beat up on an Arab Country which attacked it in conventional terms would just be best. Because they've tried what, 5 times now and gotten no-where except lost territory and face in the process. A 6th time wouldn't do them any good. I think even Syria has finally learned it's lesson that direct attacks on Israel are doomed to failure. Jordan and Egypt took relatively less time to learn not to mess with that critter.

We'll have to discuss Palin later face to face over some beer or something. I finder her interesting as a VP candidate. Cries of her being inexperienced are honestly humorous from the left given Biden's DNC primaries statement about his now running mate.

As far as debate quality, it was lacking in actual debate. It was more tit for tat in sound bite format. I think the Media has too much at stake in this and isn't impartial enough, that or the campaign people are being too coy for their own good.
