sappersgt @ 3:06pm: Class
This jub isn't my idea of a great use of my time, but it does brighten the day when I see course critiques that rate the classes I give highly and have positive things to say about the course as a whole.  About half the course critiques can be thrown out unread--one can tell if the student is simply filling out the paper because it is a requirement, or actually providing feedback.

Mail is taking just a bit over a week to get to us, at least based on the stuff I've gotten so far.

Other than that, NSTR.[1]

I'll be (hopefully) hosting a Winter Ball later this year which will be of the masque variety. I thought as host I should wear something suitably garish and noticable and so have decided on the theme of a peacock.

However, the main element I wanted to incorporate was a peacock feather eye cloak wherin the full garment had the feathers layered in such a way as to make only the beautiful eyes visible.

I was struck by an idea today though that this may well work better with a slightly Steampunk twist both for cost - since peacock feathers are really quite expensive - and appearance.

So I thought I should pop my head in here and pick your brains, figuratively speaking. Suggest a way of making peacock feather eyes out of Steampunk materials - cogs, sheet metal. &c - which makes each eye less expensive than a feather (approx. £1.40 GBP). Ideally the loose idea I have is that I'd purchase a bulk of cogs, washers and the like and sew, glue or solder them together to create the eyes I want, though I'm very unsure about this.

Due to the amount of fabric involved in the cloak I think I'm looking at using somewhere in the region of 250-500 'feathers' for the whole thing, possibly interspersed with one or two real feathers. There shall certainly be peacock feathers on whatever hat I end up wearing.

Well, dammit. I had a really cool story lined up and I forgot what it was. Instead you get mini-reviews of some good music I've seen recently. My friend John is a great concert buddy; nobody listens to music better than a musician, and he's scored tickets to some incredible shows and shared them with me.

At the Stevie Wonder show I ran into a large contingent of the Hot Chick Brigade (I love those girls), and also a woman I sang with something like 16 years ago, which was surprising and fun. She said she'd read about me in Blues Audience, but I haven't seen that so maybe it was from years ago. The girls had better seats than we did, so we split off when it started pouring rain and thankfully we all had seats under the roof part of the venue. Unlike many fantastic acts (who make me want to give it up and never play music again), Stevie was inspirational from beginning to end. His songwriting is so spot on and his band, while not flawless, was really good and played what needed to be played. Also, what can I say about the guy's singing? Even when he's not in 100% perfect form, he skyrockets all over his range as though it's completely effortless. Every inch of him is amazing.

The Parliament/Funkadelic/George Clinton/P-Funk All Stars concert was as expected, funky and forever. 3.5 unbroken hours of groove, and although I personally would have preferred 5 horn players and 2 guitarists instead of the opposite, you know what you're getting when you go see President Clinton of One Nation Under A Groove. I never did figure out how many people were actually in the band, because they came and went so randomly. In addition to the horns, there were lots of singers (8-9?), a couple of keyboardists, I think 3 revolving drummers, and at least 5 guitarists with a WALL of Marshall stacks. The big surprise for me was Kendra Foster, wow. Don't let the MySpace page fool you, this chick's got it going on. I'd looked through her stuff a few months ago and wasn't super impressed, but Live is a Whole 'Nother Show with this girl. If you get a chance, go see her.

It's been years since I saw the Rebirth Brass Band. I hit this show alone, but I still had a blast. It's a younger version of the band than when I last saw them, but they are still powerful players, and in the last year or so I've totally revised my opinion of what makes a good horn section sound. In the past, brass bands have been too sloppy to keep my interest for long (I'm a salsa band/Tower of Power/drum & bugle corps-level horn fanatic), but these days apparently just playing in tune is enough for me. Of course, as always, any band with so many horns triggers my TROMBONE I WANT A TROMBONE BAND reflex so I have to be careful and limit my access to such temptation.

Anyway, enough about other shows for right now; girl's gotta sleep sometime. Here's what I'm doing this weekend:

Booty Vortex is playing a benefit ON A BOAT for the Pan Mass Challenge and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Come check it out:

Saturday - July 26, 2008
Rock & Blues Cruise
One Long Wharf
Boston, Massachusetts 02210

There are more details about the benefit and ticket info here. Did I mention ON A BOAT? What's more fun than having an ocean and a funk band in the same place, hrrrm???? Nothing, that's what!

Also, it's Chuck's last show with the band. Much sadness. We'll miss him and we want to send him off with style, so come party with us and show him your love.

faeriemage @ 11:29pm: Pre-Pennsic Vacation
Traveled to the far lands of Ithaca, NY this past Saturday through Tuesday.

Saturday: Drive 5.5 Hours and arrive at our hotel...Meadow Court Inn. Met up with buddy Joe and his girl for drinks and movie...mic found some Absinthe being sold at the large store I dub the "Liquor Mall". Then to Castaways for a friend's birthday.

Sunday: After a tasty breakfast at Collegetown Bagels, we met up with Joe and his girl again to check out some wineries due to our being in the fantastic Fingerlakes Region. Hit up Wagner (http://www.wagnervineyards.com/), the Rasta Ranch (http://www.winecountrycabins.com/to_do/wine/wineries/rasranch.htm) and Hazlitt (http://www.hazlitt1852.com/). After having too much wine and sleepin to recoup,we checked into the Hilton smack downtown and we went to the State Diner for food (cheese fries with gravy...mmmm)and then to the Haunt for "Binary" where we joined up with a bunch of people I haven't seen in FOREVER including scar_let. Post-club-foodage at Shortstop(http://www.shortstopdeli.com/welcome.htm) for fantastic subs (I always get the corned beef).

Monday: My ex-roomie from college came down from Rochester to meet up sometime after mike and wandered around the Commons for a bit and went to the new coffee/snackie shop run by the Twelve Tribes (http://www.twelvetribes.com/whereweare/us/ithaca.html) where I was served Ithaca Roast Mate by an ex-punk rawker. Ended up dining at Moosewood because ya can't go to Ithaca as a tourist without going to the home of the cookbook. Mike went off to play music with some of my friends for a bit. Ended up racing to the hotel hot tub for 15 minutes only to learn that it was more of a "lukewarm tub". bleh.

Tuesday: Breakfast @ Manos Diner and then a trip in the rain to Ithaca Falls. Sun came out by the time we ended up at the gorgeous cemetery off of Cornell's campus. We ended our trip by stopping in Binghamton to hang out with Joe (sans gf) and some household members of Casa Bardicci.

Today was recoup day but I have to go to work tomorrow...........

RE: ABNEY PARK - STEAMPUNK PICNIC!

Ahoy all you, Steampunk Chaps & Chapettes,

Been reading this Steampunk Fashion Extravaganza for some time now and to be fair thought that is was about time I posted something.

I live aboard my boat, in London and the South of France.  However, whenever I am moored in London, I love visiting, Abney Park Cemetery and Arboretum, (now you know where the band took there name after), I moor in Limehouse marina so it is not more that a quick subterranean train ride away and it is so wonderfully Steampunk, well they would never have named a Steampunk Band after if if it was'nt (Huzzah).

However I have always longed to have a Steampunk Sunday afternoon picknick and photoshoot there, but have never got around to it, so I was wondering if there are any of you London based Steampunk phanatics who would like to try and set an event like this up, you know lots of jolly old pork pies and ham sandwiches
and lashings of Ginger Beer.

If there are any like minded people out would you mind awfully getting in contact with me at: nemo@itbloke.net so we can try and set it up.

Thanks for you time in this matter I really do look forward to hearing from anyone who wants to give it a go,

Kind Regards & Toodle Pip for Now, Chaps and Chapettes,

Your result for The Steampunk Style Test...

The Explorer

7% Elegant, 47% Technological, 30% Historical, 64% Adventurous and 41% Playful!

You are the Explorer, the embodiment of steampunk’s adventuring spirit. For you, clothing should be rugged and reliable, and just as functional as it is attractive. You probably prefer khaki or leather, and your accessories are as likely to include weapons as technological gizmos. You probably wear boots and gloves, and maybe a pith helmet. Most of what you wear is functional, and if you happen to wear goggles people had better believe that you use them. In addition to Victorian exploration gear, your outfit probably includes little knickknacks from your various travels. Above all, you are a charming blend of rugged Victorian daring and exotic curiosity.

Very cool pieces.

I am currently making a necklace out of a smashed up watch, I found the above link while looking for bits and pieces online- but tell me, do any of you know where one might find sprockets and gears? I want to sew a bunch onto some corsetry, but I think watch bits are a little small for the desired effect.

So, ladies, how do you like your hair?

I'm going to get mine cut on Tuesday... but I'm not sure what I want to do.
Mine is currently shoulder length, with weird layers in it (Still in recovery from a butchered hair cut.), and straight as a board.
Can anyone recommend some steamy (read as: Victorian) hair cuts?

Also, how do you like your makeup :3
Its something I haven't seen discussed too often. Do you think of some makeup styles as more 'steampunk' than others?

I'm pretty lax on the makeup factor. If I wear any at all, its generally a copper shadow, with a bit of liner and mascara. I'd just like to know your opinions on this :3

Heh. Psych! My electric rate was down a bit last month (15.645¢), but WAY up this month (18.021¢). Figures. At least I was hardly (if at all) running the system half the month. Overall I'm paying some 65% more now than I was when I moved in just over 3 years ago, and 123% more for the first 250 kWh.

Also bah to the promise of rain from Dolly. We got all of half an inch (in that storm this morning), and the skies are steadily clearing.
